General Dentistry
General dentistry is essential to a good oral healthcare routine. We encourage you to bring all family members in for a preventive care exam and cleaning at least once every six months. Dr. Jenny Kardaris offers everything from routine checkups to advanced oral surgery.
Common General Dentistry Services
The goal of general dentistry is to prevent oral disease through preventive and restorative care. Below are typical services you can receive from a general dentist.
Dental cleaning and exam
During your preventive care exam, one of our dental hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth with an ultrasonic scaler and some handheld tools. The preventive exam also includes flossing and polishing your teeth. Additionally, we take X-rays of each patient once a year at New Age Dental Care. The X-rays make it easy for Dr. Kardaris to monitor potential oral health concerns and determine the best time to intervene.
After our dental hygienist has finished cleaning your teeth, Dr. Kardaris inspects your teeth and gums to see if you have gum disease or tooth decay issues. If any new concerns arise during your bi-annual dental cleaning and exam, you must return to our dental practice for a follow-up appointment.
Filling cavities
When a tooth decays, Dr. Kardaris removes that portion and applies filling material to the rest of the tooth to preserve it. You receive anesthesia at the start of the procedure and are free to go home once the material hardens. Try to avoid eating anything until the anesthesia wears off to avoid accidentally biting the side of your cheek when you cannot feel it.
Oral cancer screening
Dentists are uniquely positioned to detect oral cancer during routine exams. This is especially important since most oral cancers do not present symptoms until the condition is much more advanced. You can reduce your risk of oral cancer by quitting smoking, drinking alcohol only in moderation, and avoiding excess sun exposure.
Root canal treatment
Each of your teeth contains blood vessels and pulp inside their chambers. You need root canal treatment when the pulp becomes infected to avoid having the tooth extracted later. A root canal involves Dr. Kardaris removing the inflamed and infected tissue and then placing a dental crown on top of the tooth to prevent further bacterial infections.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) treatment
Your temporomandibular joints sit at the top of each of your jaws and connect to your skull. These joints can become painful due to grinding your teeth at night, stress, arthritis, injuries, and several other reasons. Fortunately, TMJ is highly treatable. Many patients find quick relief by wearing a mouthguard at night to prevent teeth grinding, reducing stress, or taking prescription or non-prescription medications.
Tooth extractions
Dr. Kardaris removes teeth to help prepare for orthodontic treatment, dental implants, and unnecessary wisdom teeth.
