Why Visit the Dentist Regularly?

Patients come into my Chesterfield Valley office all the time who haven’t been to a dentist in a while – sometimes years. I know that they come in because we offer relaxation and sedation dentistry, and that finally nudges them past the fear of the dentist to get them through the door. So, why visit the dentist regularly?

Some even ask – “Why do I need to see the dentist every six months? I’ve been told that since I was a child – but why? Do I really need to visit the dentist regularly?”

This is a great question. After all, if our teeth don’t hurt, why bother to see a dentist, right?

Well, the main reason for regular checkups is because the dentist can catch small cavities before they start to hurt. This is much better than waiting until the tooth degrades so far that it hurts. Why?

Every bit of dental work that has to be done degrades the structural integrity of the tooth. If the cavity is caught early on – before it starts to hurt – the tooth’s integrity remains strong. When you wait until the enamel has been eaten away so much that it impacts the nerve, that tooth will require more intervention to fix, and it won’t be as strong when it’s done.

Waiting for pain before getting yourself to the dentist is like waiting for your feet to hurt to tell you that your shoes have fallen apart.

This is why you should come in every 6 months or so. The dentist can catch things early on, while they are a minor problem and inexpensive to fix. This is, indeed, why you should visit the dentist regularly!
